I think I took a photo of the same two ladies at last year’s jamboree!! The leopard print shades are a stylin’ new addition though- fashion FORWARD!!
the old mixing with the new style…..amazing how they can survive and keep warm in those extreme conditions…..love their collar…what kind of fur is it?????
i suppose their overcoat is lines with the same fur???? is it mustoxe fur????
The woman on the left is Sarah Tingmiak, who was born out on the land. Her parka has wolverine fur on the hood (doesn’t collect frost at -40C) and muskrat on the cuffs. The parka is a two piece cloth shell out side, and a wool dufffle (think Hudson Bay blankets, from which they originally came)/ satin lining. The braid along the waist is a unique folded cloth Delta braid. Prior to the 20’s the parkas were all muskrat fur, since there are literally millions of them in the Delta. Once kids went to residential school in Aklavik about that time, and the HBC set up shop, people started using cloth. Interestingly enough the mission teachers wore cloth parkas in early photos and several years later, pictures of them showed that they were all wearing muskrat parkas.
Sarah’s husband Abel is singlehandedly responsible for the resurrection of the Arctic winter games, and the traditional inuit games of skill.
