I met Adam and his friend while they were out hunting on the Ice in the bay of Ulukhaktok. They were looking for Seal at the moment, and had shot at one a few minutes before I arrived. In order to bag their prey, they stand on the side of floating ice and wait till a seal swims by the opening in the ice, then shoot at it.
The pole on the side of his snowmobile is a harpoon. The barb on the end of the pole is connected to a rope which is attached to a gas can that floats on the surface of the water. After they shoot and harpoon the whale they can follow it around and wait till the can stops moving, then hopefully the whale will float to the surface. Adam said a few good kills and he and many friends will have enough whale to last the winter.
