Spring is coming to the Arctic! Although, you wouldn’t think so due to the -35 week we’ve had here in Inuvik, but it’s on the way. With warm weather comes plenty of work… Beakers (scientists), park rangers, surveyors, geologists, and adventure junkies flock to the north in search of excitement, money, and fame. With them comes plenty of materials, fuel, and supplies to aid their expeditions.

For instance, the other day we strapped skis onto the Twin Otter and dropped off 6 barrels of fuel in a place called the ‘Husky Lakes’ in the Yukon. You think you get hosed at the pumps when filling your car? Well, to fly 6 drums (45 gal per drum) out to a destination an hour from Inuvik, costs about $7000. Not to mention the cost of buying the fuel from the distributor, the transportation to our hanger, and the removal of used fuel drums from the site. Needless to say, each barrel probably costs around $1500-2000.

Anyways, here is a picture taken after we dropped off the liquid gold. You can see Captain Blake, the Twin Otter, and the fuel. Note the wheel skis that allow us to land on both snow and asphalt with the flick of a switch.
