Well, our time living in the Arctic has come to an end. It was a great year and a half… We will be back! I’ll be back for flying rotations and Becky might do a stint or two back at the hospital, but I don’t think we’ll end up living up here again. It was a wonderful experience, but we are about to start our next adventure!
In what can be called a complete 180, we will be moving to the Tropics for 6 months. (-40° to +30°) Specifically the Maldives (pronounced Maal-deeves), a group of 26 atolls, consisting of 1,192 islands, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka/India. We will be living in the main city of Malé (pronounced Maa-lay), which is an island 1.7km x 1.0km that houses 100,000 people. Think downtown Toronto on an island. Here is a picture of the city.
My company flys a fleet of Twin Otter (DHC-6) on floats that take tourists from the main airport to the some of the various island resorts. We fly in shorts, t-shirts, and bare feet. A stark contrast from my previous winter in the Arctic.
I’m looking forward to doing some of the best snorkling/diving in the world, as well as photograph the lifestyle and culture in that part of the world. But, it won’t be all beachy.. 5 days a week we need to be up early to catch the 5am Dhoni (taxi boat) out to the airport, flying close to 15 legs a day, and living in the hot tropics in a tiny city walled by the ocean with 100,000 other people.
The screengrab above is my route (Google Maps Link) down to the Maldives. Starting in Inuvik, NT, I’ll be heading down to Edmonton for a quick overnight, then to Vancouver where I’ll be hanging out with my brother for 4 days.. Need to do some last minute shopping for shorts and suntan lotion. Then on to Seoul for a quick 1 hour turn, and then on to Singapore where I have a 4 day layover to explore the city. Finally finishing in Male on the 28th of November.
Anyone know some cool things to see and do in Singapore?

i hear chewing gum is the cool thing to do in singapore.
ps. i’m intensely jealous of your new digs. you should look up that shazeen samad photoblogger guy that lives in the maldives… http://www.shazeensamad.com/

I’m envious at the same time as I wish you and Becky all the best in your new adventures. Good for you!
I have really enjoyed your pictures from the Inuvik area and I’m sure your photography from the Maldives will be no less spectacular.
So what night are you in edmonton?
