Scenes from the ice road.. On the left you can see my boots and the cracks that develop in the ice over time. On the right are some interesting patterns in the snow that the wind creates.

The Ice road in the MacKenzie Delta takes you between the 3 communities of Inuvik, Aklavik (86 km), and Tuktoyaktuk (187 km). It is an essential supply line which allows for those communities to stockpile fuel, food, and building supplies cheaper than it would cost by air. During the summer the only transportation between those communities is by Air (quite expensive) or boat/barge. During peak season the ice road is open to all general and commercial traffic with weights less than 45,000 kg. During the past 5 years the average open and closing dates have been December 17 and April 30 respectively.

Very cool looking! What’s your best bet on how thick the ice gets on the MacKenzie?
