During the climb back up the foothill to the plane it started to rain. The tour group made it on board with enough time to taxi back to the ‘runway’ and take off before being grounded for the night. On board the plane, the windows were fogged up (and so was my lens). A minute or two into the flight back to Inuvik, things started to clear up. And out the window there was a brilliant double rainbow… I passed the camera up to Josh and he managed to get this shot out the window.
As we climbed the rainbow appeared to be following us.. BUT *insert nerd talk* Rainbows aren’t fixed, they depend on the observers point of view.. Your head, or shadow of your head, would be at the very center of the rainbow you are observing. Also, the sun will also be directly behind you when viewing the rainbow. A big sorry to you pot of gold chasers.
Double rainbows ’supernumerary rainbows’ are also pretty rare.. They are best visible when the droplets are very small. As you may have already noticed the second (outer) lighter rainbow has its color reversed, purple, green, orange, and red.

Fantastic capture. Not sure I’ve ever seen one that small or that close. Most of the rainbows I used to see in Grenada though were double rainbows, but nothing like this.
how in the heck did you capture that??
