Another smoke abstract shot! Last time I posted one of these I promised to tell how I did it. Well, it was actually quite simple.
The smoke is from a burning incense candle about 3 feet in front of a black background. To light the shot I used a SB-600 flash setup remotely about 90 degrees to the side. The key to the light is that you don’t want to light up the background, so make sure it is at an angle so it won’t bounce off the background. I ended up using the 50mm 1.8 for its superb sharpness and shot at f1.8 at 1/160sec. If you need to know any more info, don’t be afraid to email!

I would like to add that for the colors achieved in this photo the photographer will require a devoted accomplice to hold coloured glass in front of the flash. Teeny little wine glasses were used for this photo series.
AND as an aside, you will also need a cleaning staff to put the dining room back together afterward. Not that I know…
