The Makenzie Delta River is a major artery for shipping goods into Inuvik. There are no paved/gravel roads between Ft. McPhearson and Inuvik so they use the Mackenzie as a means of transportation. In the summer they ship trucks/cars up on ferries, and in the winter they turn it into an ice highway!
The only problem with this is when the Ice starts thawing and forming. In the spring the road thaws and goods have to be flown in until the ice breaks and the ferries can start moving. Thus the price of grocries up here depends on the seasons. Great for the airline I work for, but bad for me because the price of perishables goes through the roof. By through the roof I mean $7.50 for 1.5L of milk and $19 for 2.5L of Tropicana orange juice.
Anyways, here is a picture of said ice road. This picture was taken last week, and since then it has thawed quite a bit. I talked to one of the stockers at the Arctic Food store and he predicts another week or so before the ferries start running. Yay, I can eat healthy again soon!

I lived on a small island in the Caribbean for 2 years and I can sympathize. Most products I was used to had to be shipped or flown in which had a huge impact on my wallet. A half gallon of ice cream was literally worth it’s weight in gold.
That’s a wicked shot. Pilots definately have an advantage when it comes to some angles in photography.
a stunning shot. the composition is superb, with the road leading from lower left to the red propeller in the top right. great job.
